3 Wheeler Buggies

A three-wheel buggy is great for rough terrain providing the most comfortable ride for your child. They are also more convenient to move and push than a four-wheel buggy, particularly those with fabric slings or modular seat units that are placed snugly in the frame, offering the most efficient geometry and weight distribution.

Stability

Three-wheeled buggys are very stable, and this makes them a great option for off-roading (especially when equipped with a seat unit that is all-terrain or off-road). They typically have large front tires that can handle bumps, kerbs and rough terrain. Some models even feature a lockable front tire to provide extra stability on uneven terrain.

It's worth bearing in mind that 3 wheeled pushchairs-wheel buggies can have a lower center of gravity than 4-wheeled models and this can mean that they can tip over more easily. The best 3-wheeled pushchairs are built with the perfect geometry to ensure they remain solid in all conditions. They should be able of turning at a single click and be easy to steer using just one hand and have the front wheel rotate 360o that makes them great for manoeuvring and navigating difficult terrain.

For really tricky surfaces be sure to choose models with air-filled tyres also known as pneumatic tyres, which are designed to work on non-paved tracks and should cope with rocks, mud, and more. A lot of all-terrain buggies have a swivelling wheel on the front that can be locked for extra stability when you're dealing with rough terrain.

A 3-wheeled pram is a great choice for those who run or enjoy walking fast uphill. This is especially true if you plan to connect an infant car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is a great example, with a wide-facing seat that reclines flat. It also comes with a new 5-point harness as well as storage space for all your gear (plus an extension of 50+ sun hood). It's light, compact and suitable from birth and can be used with the use of a car seat or carrycot. It also handles some light jogging 3 wheel stroller, but isn't designed for serious runners.

Weight

If you're seeking a buggy that will take on tricky terrain, you need one with big wheels. These will cope well over grass, cobbles and dirt tracks, and provide the smoothest ride for anyone. They are also great for jogging as they're equipped with suspension and are easy to move up and down kerbs. However, the drawback is that they are quite heavy to push.

The Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 is the best 3 wheel buggy (Check This Out) to use on rough terrain (pictured above). The 3-wheel buggy is extremely maneuverable due to its 16 rear wheels as well as the front wheel can be locked. It has air tyres which do need occasional pumping and it can be used to carry children until the age of 3. MFM reviewer Kath said that her toddler loved the shape of the seat and she found it easy to steer with her 3-year-old on board.

The Baby Jogger Versa GT is another great option. It comes with a movable handlebar, a top-quality hood that offers 50+ UV protection, and a high quality hood. It is also easy to move kerbs upwards and downwards, and can fit into the boot of a car that is small. It can also be used as a pram, with an infant car seat for infants and toddlers.

Fabric slings are positioned inside the frame and not on top of the frame like modular seats. This design provides a lower center of gravity that is at the ideal height, instantly making it easier to push and lighter to kerb pop (you should never underestimate how often you'll do this when you're a new parent!)

Seating

There are many options for seating in 3 wheelers. The carrycot included is ideal for a baby (which MFM reviewer Alice describes as a cozy and comfortable lay-flat bed that can be used on and off the buggy). Older infants and toddlers will appreciate the spacious and padded seat unit with adjustable ventilation. The seats are not able to recline fully, but they can be adjusted to the lowest point. This should still allow your child plenty of room and headroom.

A fabric sling is also available. It has the advantage that it is positioned within the frame, rather than on top as a modular seat. This creates a lower center of gravity with perfect weight distribution. This makes it easier to push, particularly on bumpy terrain or over curbs. MFM reviewer Kath liked the way this style of seat dealt with obstacles.

This type of buggy has an enormous basket, along with other beneficial features, such as an hood that can be extended with 50+ UV protection, a simple to use brake pedal, and some unique visibility lights that can be placed in front of the occupants to ensure safety when riding on rough terrain.

If you're searching for a stroller that can grow with your family it's the sport(tm) is a world first that can take in infants and be modified to accommodate three or more children as they grow, all in one footprint.

Stores

The 3-wheeled frame is much more sturdy and can be moved with one hand. It's also better for terrain that is difficult. However, it also means that the shopping basket doesn't hold the same amount as a 4-wheeled buggy.

A top-quality ATP will have pneumatic tyres, a cushioned grip for better comfort, and an excellent suspension. It should be able to accommodate a carrycot or a car seat, which means you can use it from the time of birth.

MFM's reviewers found that the 3-wheeler frame didn't fit through their home's doors or car boot. If you're concerned about space, be sure to verify the dimensions when the buggy is folded before buying.

Look for a 3-wheeler with 2 (or 3!) seats. This is the best choice for your child's future and will save you money. The iCandy strawberry sport is one of the best of these that can be used as a single seat from day dot and later converts to twin buggies when your baby begins walking.

Tyres

These tires cushion bumps and uneven surfaces to make your child's journey more comfortable. These are found on pushchairs like the Phil & Ted's Sport, which MFM reviewer Kath said was "an exceptional ride for her toddler". She also noted that the grippy tyres on it made it easy to tackle kerbs and cobbles.

These tyres are sometimes difficult to maintain and must be filled regularly. They are also more vulnerable to punctures than foam tyres, so you'll need to make sure that you have a repair kit, spare inner tube and pump handy when traveling with your buggy.

PU tyres are found on a lot more pushchairs than air-filled tyres, but they're still as sturdy. PU tire are easily identifiable by their matte finish and supple feel. They also slide easily on even and tied surfaces.

You can usually identify the difference between air-filled and PU tire by running your fingers over them, if it feels firm, then it's a rubber tyre, and If it slides, then it's a PU. You can also verify that your buggy is fitted with PU tyres by slipping the tyres onto a clean, flat surface - they'll be able to roll easily and should fit snugly into their wheel hubs.

Foam tyres are often used in high-performance buggies and Joggers due to their ability to deal with the rough terrain that's associated with this kind of pushchair. This can make your double buggy 3 wheels less stable as the foam loses its springy nature. Also, these types of tyres can often be noisy as they make lots of noise when you turn and make your way through the town.
