The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas and doing business in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. Toto saw North America as a growth market for Washlet's bidets and toilets, as opposed to its "base" markets of Japan and China.

The album was a massive blockbuster but not without its difficulties. The record companies placed the band under pressure to deliver the top single or else they would pull them. Luckily for Toto they did with the help of the smash hit single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is a result of their previous experiences. Before forming the group, members worked as session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their sonic signature has become the norm for '80s pop, influencing many contemporary artists.

The album opens up hard with songs such as Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to write fantastic AOR songs that slowly sink into your head. And the album ends with Great Expectations, a song that combines folk with distortion AOR and could sound like a complete flop, but works amazingly well.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes started to plummet. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band was through various drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the group in the aftermath of drug-related charges. However, the band continued as a trio with Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Despite the chaos, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation that was not as successful as IV. The band managed to release an album that topped the charts, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was also the first album featuring a new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album is an ode to the traditional sextet style and an even more consistent and powerful effort with a harder edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the development of the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. After touring to promote their album, the band recorded the band's Amsterdam live performance which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released a brand new studio album just a few months after and then embarked on a tour around the world to help promote it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old tapes and demos for an album that would feature songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed in the form of a double-album called Then and Now in 2001. It was the band's first album that did not contain the single track "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".
