How to Replace an audi key blade G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU uses this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult because there are two connector pins and they serve different purposes but the most effective method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. Examine for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors are not firing anymore. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was dry. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get zero Ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, but i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

1200px-Vauxhall_logo_2019.svg_.pngThe fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or in a local parts store. Test them out by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injectors, etc. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger an engine shut down.

A damaged G28 sensor Audi Key Fob Replacement could result in an inaccurate gearbox speed counter and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire while in the gear. If you experience any of these issues it is likely that your sensor is failing and should be replaced. They are cheap and easy-to-find especially when they're an Bosch sensor like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part would be a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a myriad of issues in your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission in your audi etron key since it sends information to the ECU regarding how fast or slowly the audi car key case's engine is spinning. If this sensor fails, it will affect the performance of the transmission as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear and transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via a grey wire. The ECU uses this signal to regulate the amount of fuel and boost, and also timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. You can also verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and Replacement Car Key Audi pin T26a/12. You should detect a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms in these areas. This is a common part across the audi a5 Key Fob 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU. Good ones could be available in wrecking yards.
